Beer, Derby, Beards, Sunday – Snacking on the Weekend

Be prepared to spend the next 4 days with everyone you know.

The Reader’s Choice Awards are back and yours truly was not nominated this year. However, that means that instead of the stomach clenching pain of the possibility of this local only blog winning and then the disappointment of finding out a national website won, I will be able to sit back and watch all the action happen. What that also means is that my friends have all my attention and don’t have to spend the night feeling sorry for me. Also, no one will buy me sympathy shots. Bummer.

But all the things that make Macon great, as nominated by you, dear readers, will be out in full force, usually in their finest and ready to have fun. They will cheer when they win, laugh when they lose, and drink champagne/beer/mixed drinks like champions. Because if you’re out, you’re a winner.

Now does it mean you’re not a winner if you don’t make it to the Awards on Thursday? Maybe if that was the only thing that was going on this weekend, but you will need plenty of rest as you consider where to expend your energy this weekend. Whether you spend the obvious school night and stay out with the people most of Macon considers the best or you decide to indulge in a small park beer fest, whether you consider watching cars built by your friends racing down a very steep hill (nothing could go wrong, right?), or you decide that the music you want to hear is played by a band named KOPECKY and Sunday is the best day for it, you definitely have a lot to consider. So what’s on tap for this weekend? The big things and the small things that equal the awesome things? Check it out below!

Thursday

Reader’s Choice Awards

You voted and now you get to see the results! Did you rally all of your friends enough to take home the golden record? Only two people know and they’re not talking until tomorrow night! There will be some stellar performances, some comedy, and a lot of craziness. ‘Cause you know the craziness didn’t start with Chris Horne.  Performances by Floco Torres (I heard he’s going to do something from his new collaboration with DJ Shawty Slim), Dalmation, Sabir, Widow Pills, and other special guests. All starting at 6 (red carpet) at the Cox Capitol Theatre.

SOM Drink Drown Laylo Lopez Mill

Drink and Drown with DJ Laylo Lopez at the Mill

Laylo Lopez is great and if you need a little liquid persuasion to help you dance, The Mill has certainly got a deal for you… in their own words:

Drink and Drown
What exactly does this mean?
The first 20 people will get $10 drink and drown.
The next 20 people will get $15 drink and drown.
The next 20 people will get $18 drink and drown.
And finally, the next 20 folks will get $20 drink and drown.
It means you need to come out early and be one of the first 80 people through the doors!

SOM Beard Bourbon Bacon

Beards, Bourbon, and BBQ

Three words invoke the spirit of a man: Beards, Bourbon, & Bacon.

On Saturday, April 11 at 7pm, the Cannonball House will celebrate all three! Beards are trendy again, so why not celebrate! Bourbon has never gone out of style and no matter how often we are told that bacon may not be good for us, it is still holding on, like kudzu, and is worthy of our devotion.

Brian Ochoa, Owner of The Gentry, will share ways to maintain your beard and how to grow one. The formal dining room will contain all things BACON. Try something savory or tempt your taste buds with something sweet. For those over 21, head outside to the historic outdoor kitchen, which is Macon’s only fully intact slave quarters, and be exposed to the proper sampling of a wide range of bourbons. Ryan Smith, Mixologist at Dovetail, will guide you on a sampling journey. Finally, retire to the garden cigar grotto for conversation. Enjoy live music, a beard contest, and a little history mixed in!

Ladies are welcomed to attend because what man has worked that hard on his beard if not for the admiration of the fairer sex?
Sponsored in part by: Ashah Photography, Southern Vintage, Chris Sheridan & Co, The Gentry, and the UDC. Tickets are $20 and limited to 150 people.

SOM Kopecky

Second Sunday Featuring KOPECKY on Coleman Hill

You may have known KOPECKY in their former life as Kopecky Family  Band but whatever they are called, they are still going to rock the first Second Sunday event of the year. While other people look to the calendar for the first signs of Spring, my sign has always been Second Sunday and I’d like to keep it that way. At Coleman Hill for the first time as Washington Park gets a long overdue makeover, be prepared to find enjoyment in the park, the music, and the friends you treasure.
